Begin at Esquiline Hill and visit inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This incredible ornate structure is often referred to as "Our Lady of the Snow" and is the biggest church in all of Rome that's dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It gained that title from a legend that states that the Roman patricians known as John and his wife offered to donate their possessions to Mary and were shown Mary's thanks by a snowfall mid-summer and a vision of the Virgin. See the Holy Stairs, or Sancta Scala, where Jesus stood on his way to trial. Pass by the Lateran Palace, where Popes lived for a thousand years. Tour inside the Basilica of San Giovanni, which is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome. The oldest basilica in Rome was dedicated in 324 and suffered two major fires in the 1300s but was fully reconstructed since; the current facade dates to the 1700s. The interior of the Basilica of San Giovanni is not to be missed, as it is full of amazing artwork and architecture.
